That is why I wish I had known such things before I had so many postal years put in.

Then other UPS drivers answered my questions regarding their jobs and pay/benefits. I don't think the UPS drivers I know work any harder than the city carriers with whom I work. That is how I learned so much about their pay and benefits initially. I think just about all of my fellow city carriers in my office would do quite well as UPS drivers.įWIW, when I was a Postmaster it was not uncommon for the UPS driver who brought parcels to my office to spend 10 or 15 minutes talking to me. They are efficient, hardworking people who take pride in being good workers. Most city carriers I know work diligently and don't "take their time". Remember, the UPS drivers don't have to carry those 150 pound parcels unassisted. UPS workers get shoulder surgeries and park and loop city carriers get leg surgeries. I don't view it as more difficult physically-just different. Delivering just parcels has its own appeal.

I do like park and loop routes and there is no way UPS workers walk as much as a park and loop route. I think all city carriers should work as hard as UPS workers. I believe it is 1 in 6 that UPS hires off the street. My friend (fellow carrier and also someone who worked for me personally) got hired quickly because he went to a large city. USPS carriers can take their time and enjoy working outdoors. Not to mention, UPS is a more physically demanding job and you are expected to MOVE. Most are working part-time overnight shifts while they wait to move up (which most people simply can’t afford to do) It was my understanding that’s it’s rather difficult to obtain a delivery driver position quickly. She actually had one of the coveted clerk jobs. One actually hired on without telling me, which was fine with me. None of them work for the USPS despite how easy it would be for them to do so. I give people here the same advice I would give my children. If it was just me, I would move to a big city and be a mailhandler to finish out my career. As with everyone, all my decisions factor in my family first and my wishes second. But once I have completed my 30 years soon I will look into my options to see if it is feasible to jump to UPS. And, in case you wonder, I learned too late or I would have switched to UPS. I don't know if you know as many UPS employees as I do, but I sure wish I was looking at twice the retirement as a UPS employee and could make $100K in 5 days a week instead of 6 and was paying zero for health insurance instead of $600/mo.

My former coworker who switched to UPS a year or so ago has a different opinion. Their other employees are paid less than postal employees. Sorry, I should have mentioned my comment was regarding delivery employees. This is a postal forum, no reason to promote a rival here.

When you factor in everything that each job entails, this is false info. Just thought I would mention it since their pay and benefits are so much better. And you can also hire on as temp help for UPS if you cannot jump straight to regular. Old subbing for old is generally best.įWIW, UPS hires drivers straight from street to regular to fill about 1 in 6 of its regular jobs. Young regulars and young RCAs ahead of you can be bad. It can be a crap shoot, but you can sometimes increase your odds by researching and choosing an office that seems to have better odds for you. We had a situation where 4 or 5 RCAs made regular within a couple of years because others quit and then some regulars retired and one was killed. However, sometimes RCAs get tired of waiting and quit-leaving you an opening to fill their spot. If an office is hiring RCAs it could be because they had several make regular and maybe they won't have any regular spots open up for a while. Some RCAs luck into a good situation and some seek out an office where the odds are in their favor. It would be great if you somehow got the lay of the land and were able to find a spot where you had a shot at regular soon after your year was up. Our senior rural carrier spent 16 years as a sub. An RCA must work 1 year before they can get a regular job.
